The opening concert of LSO’s 80th season conveys themes of home and homecoming with three quintessentially American pieces. Copland’s Appalachian Spring captures the optimism and courage characteristic of the American experience. Following a newly commissioned piece by Robert Sirota, the concert closes with Dvorák’s Symphony No. 9, the New World Symphony.

Pianist Ann Schein, a long-time friend of LSO, returns to play the popular and virtuosic Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1. On the first half of the program, Pärt’s mystical Festina Lente adds a touch of minimalism to the concert, followed by Dvorák beautiful and melodic Serenade in D Minor.

Concertmaster Anton Miller is LSO’s featured soloist in an evening dedicated to Russian composers. Glinka’s opera Russlan and Ludmilla is based on a Russian fairy tale that is both charming and satiric, evident in this brilliant overture. Prokofiev’s glorious Violin Concerto No. 2 and an audience favorite, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, round out the concert.

The Lied Center for Performing Arts is the venue for LSO’s final concert, Mahler’s breathtaking Symphony No. 2. The “Resurrection” Symphony is an intensely passionate piece that captures the full realm of human emotion within its sweeping scope. Vocalists Esther Heideman and Martha J. Hart, and members of Abendmusik, the Lincoln Civic Choir and the Nebraska Wesleyan Choirs, will join us for the work’s soaring final movement.
